Burnhead bed and breakfast is situated on Hadrian's Wall walk in the heart of the beautiful Northumberland National Park. Both the wall walk and the pennine way pass the front door. The house is built with stone from the wall and lies on the site of the wall. So why stay near the wall when you can stay on it. The original Burnhead Cottage was built as the managers house of the nearby Cawfields Quarry in 1830. The quarry became defunct many years ago and the site has been beautifully restored showing a slice through the volcanic rock strata called the "Whin Sill" upon which much of the wall is built. Cawfields is a site of major interest on the Hadrians Wall Path with Milecastle 42 easily visible. It is also the site of a Roman water mill. The views back east along the wall are classic and feature in many travel companions describing the wall. Burnhead is situated centrally in the UK, indeed the local town of Haltwhistle claims to be the centre of Britain. This means that Burnhead is ideally placed to act as a centre for visiting many areas in northern Britain. One hour in the car will take you to the English Lakes, North Yorkshire and the Scottish Borders. You can discover the delights of the Northumbrian countryside, its fascinating history and visit its glorious beaches and coastline. Although Burnhead stands in glorious isolation it is quite close to some very useful amenities. The Military Road and the A69 run east to west to join the A1 and M6. Two miles south Haltwhistle has a good bus service and has a station on the Newcastle to Carlisle rail line linking the main east and west coast lines to London, Edinburgh and Glasgow. A local bus services the Hadrian Wall route. Haltwhistle is a neat, small town with a good range of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants with a tourist information centre, bike hire facilities, and horse riding opportunities. The Milecastle Inn pub, only 10 minutes walk from Burnhead and our nearest neighbours, serves excellent food. The wonderful aspect of Burnhead is that so many walks start from its door. You can explore Hadrians Wall or head north or south and explore one of the numerous alternative routes. Cycle routes are equally good. However you fill your day, energetically or relaxing, you can be assured of a warm, friendly welcome at Burnhead with a comfortable bed and a good breakfast
